DVD Watermarking
DVD watermarking provides an efficient mechanism for customising DVD images for download. A major concern with offering any sort of downloadable media content is piracy, as the downloaded images, unless protected by a DRM system (which, in the case of DVDs, is not possible) can be trivially shared via file-sharing networks or one-click hosters.
Our DVD watermarking technology adds one or more customised menus to each downloaded DVD which, typically, are used to display information such as the site from which the film was downloaded, the date and time of download, and a serial number.
While this does not prevent piracy, it should cause a potential copier to have second thoughts about copying the disc in the knowledge that, if it is found, it can be traced back.
Adding the watermark to a download takes a few tens of milliseconds. To ameliorate another potential issue - which is that creating and storing distinct DVD images for each download would be both a time and storage headache - we have also developed an incremental downloader which adds the watermark "on the fly" as the disc is downloaded.
